Uterus Removal Surgeries: An Alarming Trend among Women

Due to the adverse effects of climate change, women in coastal areas are at serious health risk.

Victim Karimon Necha of Koira Upazila in Khulna said her uterus was swollen. Then half rotted. It was black. The smell was also coming out. And after a few days it turned into cancer.

The reproductive health of young girls and women in the southern region of the country is at risk due to salty water. They are facing various problems including burning, tumours, and sores in the uterus.

Another victim, Saira Khatun, said that suddenly her blood started breaking, and stomach pain started. Then the doctor was brought. After the doctor said she did an ultrasonogram then her tumour was diagnosed. And the tumour grew. Then the doctor did an ultrasonogram again and said that the tumour was involved with the entire nerve. The operation must be done very quickly.

One of the victims, Najera Begum, said that the doctor said that there was a problem in her uterus and a tumour had appeared. That’s why her stomach hurts. And that’s why menstruation causes more irritation and pain.

Nazia Akhtar, a resident of the village, said that the problem of the uterus is high in her village. Most women have uterine problems. If a woman is having a baby, it can be seen that the uterus is moving downwards.

Many are cutting the uterus as a solution to these problems. The hysterectomy rate in different clinics of Khulna’s coal Upazila, sub-district of Khulna is 30 percent. Doctors say due to using saline water and dirty clothes instead of sanitary pads during periods increases health risks.

In this regard, duty doctor Habibur Rahman Habib of “Mayer Doa Digital Diagnostic Centre” of the Upazila said that a total of 18 operations were performed in their clinic last month. Among them, 5 uterine operations have been performed. Other operations such as appendicitis, seizures, ovarian cysts are more common. Uterine problems can be mainly caused by the high salt water content in this region. And not all people in villages are aware. He thinks that women who do not use clean clothes during periods, do not use pads, therefore such problems can be caused by dirt.

But there is hope that several organisations arrange free medical camps in different areas. Doctor Habibur Rahman mentioned in this regard that his clinic provides free medical treatment to the helpless and poor of some villages by setting up free medical camps. Sometimes some medicines are also dispensed.

As a result of the adverse effects of climate change, natural disasters such as cyclones and floods are increasing in subtropical regions. Sea level is rising. Saltwater is entering local reservoirs. Due to the reason sexual and reproductive health related problems of the young girls and women has been increasing in the costal part of Khulna district.
